January 2010 - Banquet News and New Board of Directors

AWARDS BANQUET - WHAT A BLAST!

The awards banquet for the 2009 high point award winners was rockin' at the VFW Hall in Warrenton, MO. We had approximately 90 MoRHA members present. They, along with their family members, enjoyed a synopsis by President Mike Kavanagh on where the Missouri Ranch Horse Association has been and where it is going in 2010.
John Nordwald, the Missouri Farm Bureau representative from Warrenton, was on hand to present Kelsey Luebbert with a $500.00 scholarship award. Kelsey has been accepted to William Woods College for the fall 2010 semester. This is the third year MoRHA has awarded a youth scholarship and both our previous winners were on hand to give a brief summary of where their educational pursuits have taken them. Maggie O'Leary, our 2007 winner, is an equestrian studies major at William Woods College in Fulton. Our 2008 scholarship was awarded to Louie Conti. Louie is attending the University of Missouri at Columbia as a biology major.

Quintana Garcia presented information regarding the ARHA Queen Contest and shared the qualifications and expectations in running for the "Queen of the ARHA." We hope to have a good candidate to represent MoRHA in 2010. If you think you would like to try to win the crown and want to know if you qualify, please talk to Quintana Garcia.

Earlene Cole made a plea for members to consider volunteering at the shows. She is planning on calling each and every member to enlist their help in making our shows run smoother.

After the general meeting of the members we dined on a delicious dinner provided by Cattleman's BBQ. Following dinner a slide show of the 2009 MoRHA events put together by Terry Luebbert was shown.

Tina Beutenmiller did the honors as she handed out all the 2009 high-point awards. The award table was about as festive as it could be and each award winner was handed their goodies in a blue MoRHA logo net bag. MoRHA logo buckles were awarded to the High-Point and Reserve High-Point winners in all three categories. Fleece MoRHA vests, padfolios and ribbons were part of the high-point and volunteer awards. Trophy plates were given to the versatility winners. The volunteers were given honorable mention and a leatherette MoRHA padfolio. There were smiles abound as each winner strutted up and got their bag of "goodies."
This link will let you know the member high-point standings for 2009, so you will be able to tell just what member received which award.

During all this activity the members had time to shop at the silent auction. There were so many items on the silent auction tables that some of them had to be set on the ground. Some of the big items were a case of wine from Hopewell Winery in Summer Hill, IL and also a set of four new Rod's running horse motif nylon chairs, table and trash can to match from Donna B. (wishes to remain anonymous. There were assorted lessons, paintings, equestrian clothing, horse blankets, hay bags etc from generous attendees.

Dancing followed with music provided by Jukebox Productions. Owner, Gary Williams, showed up to provide DJ duties. Some serious dancing went on with 8-year-old Caitlin Wright leading the dance troupe. It seems that our awards dinner was on the same day as Ms. Caitlin's birthday and she was quite sure that the entire party in honor of her special occasion.

I want to give a special thank you to the following members for helping with the banquet set-up and clean-up: Linda and Lindsey Conti, Dennis Cappel, Tina Beutenmiller and Mike Kavanagh showed up at 10 AM and worked until 1 o'clock getting the decorations up, arranging the tables, and setting up the awards' tables. MaryAnn Cash came early along with Austin Meador to mark all the silent auction items and help set the tables. The clean up crew consisted of Christine Wright along with Caitlin and Wil, Peggy Meador, Donna B, Mike Kavanagh, Maryann Cash and Paul, Earlene Cole, Gary Williams (my talented cousin and the owner ofJukebox Productions stayed and helped us, which was way more than our contract required). Ann Bernstein worked the "door" and kept track of all the reservations and walk-in guests. I took that job over for about a minute and had to run and find her to get her to help me. Vanessa Mame's boyfriend was a big help in getting the slide show started. Although I do not know his name, he was a blond haired young man in a black Tee-shirt and we could not have got it going without him! Vanessa - give him a hug for us. Linda Conti kept things rolling right along and worked as a behind the scenes coordinator keeping the food line flowing smoothly, the members well informed with all the appropriate forms and show-bills. Although Mona and Pat Prater were unable to attend this year, Mona provided us with decorations and encouragement, as always.

I know I have forgotten some helpers, some events, or someone of importance, but dang - it was a long evening and I'm exhausted from having just too much fun. So please forgive me if I have left you out of the acknowledgements. Just send me an e-mail and I will include you or your loved ones that I have unwittingly left out.

NEW FACES ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dennis Cappel has been appointed as a new MoRHA director and will be filling the empty slot created with the resignation of Terry Luebbert last fall. Dennis is a farrier, equine clinician, trainer, and equestrian motivational speaker. Dennis is also an ARHA judge (he makes 5 on the MoRHA board). He and his wife, Cindy, live in Silex, MO where they train horses and riders using the "Cappel System." Welcome Dennis! (See Below*)

MoRHA members Earlene Cole and Mona Prater will begin serving new two-year terms on the board of directors. Both of these well-qualified women have been tremendous assets to the Missouri charter in the past few years. You might recognize Earlene as our latest gate keeper at the State Fair and fall shows in 2009. Earlene was the past manager of the Longmeadow Rescue Ranch (a branch of the Humane Society of Missouri) and the current owner of "Take It Easy Horse Transport." Earlene will bring a wealth of equine experience and expertise to the charter and we are proud to welcome her to the board. Mona Prater is a past member of the MoRHA board, an ARHA judge and she also serves as a member of the ARHA National Scholarship board. Mona is well-known in the equine community as both a business woman (Prater Farms and Equestrian Center in Fulton) and equine educator for over 30 years. Both Mona and Earlene have extensive equine backgrounds in owning, training, showing and promoting the equestrian lifestyle and we welcome them to the board.

MoRHA directors Ann Bernstein and Linda Conti were re-elected to two-year-terms and their continued service will be most appreciated. Ann serves as our treasurer and Show Secretary and Linda is the Charter Secretary for MoRHA. Rest assured that Ann and Linda will be working non-stop, as always, to make the 2010-2011 show seasons the best they have ever been. Welcome Back Ann and Linda!

We would like to thank Ms. Quintana Garcia for her service on the board for the last two years. She has been an asset to our club in with her upbeat personality and her tireless enthusiasm. A big tip of the MoRHA cowboy hat to Quintana!

Another MoRHA director that has decided to step aside is Ms. Tina Beutenmiller. Tina has been instrumental in helping new "cutters" that come to our shows. Tina will be the person to thank for heading up the Awards Committee for the last two years and she will be missed. Once again, a big tip of the MoRHA cowboy hat to another tireless worker!

*Former MoRHA Show Secretary, Ms. Terry Luebbert, has submitted her resignation from the MoRHA board. Terry has some family obligations that do not allow her to be available for the board meetings. Terry has served as the Asst. Show Secretary and then stepped in as the official Show Secretary up until the 2009 show season. We sure appreciate all she did for our charter. Give Terry a big cowboy "Thank You" for all her hard work. Mike Kavanagh, MoRHA President, will be appointing a new director to fill the remaining year of Terry's current term.

In addition to the above changes to the board, I regret the fact that I too will be leaving my position as Administrative Secretary effective as of the end of January 2010. Due to family responsibilities I no longer have the time necessary to be an effective board member. I wish to thank my fellow board members who were instrumental in my receiving the 2009 ARHA "Member of the Year Award." What an honor that was and I will cherish it always. Mike Kavanagh will be appointing a new director to serve out the remainder of my term, which expires January, 2011. If you have an interest in serving on the board of the best ARHA charter there is, please contact Mike at 314-495-8440. Thanks for all your support - Shannon

JANUARY 2010 -HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR MoRHA FAMILY!

Brrrrrr....the New Year is certainly starting off in a frigid way with single-digit temperatures and snow. The good news is that we have crossed over the winter hump and the days are getting longer and will soon be getting warmer. Have you been riding your ranch horses and keeping them in good working shape for the upcoming show season? Hope so, because this year you are going to be bringing your stock to not only five double-judged two-day shows at the National Equestrian Center in Lake St. Louis, but also to a single-judged show at the Missouri State Fair. We are going to be busy this year showing at one of the top equestrian centers in the country located in Lake St. Louis, MO (St. Charles County).

But, before we actually get down to the business of showing our fine ranch horses, we will have to get in the mood with a little celebration in January at the Third Annual  MoRHA Awards Banquet and Dance. Cindy Cappel's Cattleman's BBQ will provide all the fixin's for a down-home style dinner. Tina Beutenmiller, the 2009 Award's Chairperson and Mike Kavanagh, our MoRHA President, will take over the duties and hand out those buckles and jackets, along with all the other logo awards to our top contenders in all categories.  After the award presentation we will dance to the music provided by Gary William's "Jukebox Productions."  In case you are not aware, Gary owns Jukebox Productions, located in St. Charles, MO and although we only rented the "jukebox" for our music last year, Gary brought it out as a favor to his cousin (me) and stayed all evening providing DJ entertainment at no additional cost. This was quite a coutesy, as you see Gary usually charges about $650 for four hours of DJ'ing and is the most popular of the 15 or so DJ's that he has working for his company. Please give Gary or his wife Kim a call should you need a DJ for your event. We do want to help those that help us and Gary has certainly provided us with some great entertainment for a ridiculously low price of just the cost of the jukebox rental.  He promised that he would repeat his performance this year, should he not be booked on the night of the 16th. I sure do not want to wish him not to be employed that night, but... should he be available.. WOW. Just make sure you do not miss him, cause he sure kept us high-steppin' last year. I guess I sound like I'm bragging about my relative, but Gary has done it all from owning his own band, playing the trumpet in a Big Band in Chicago and now being a legend in the DJ business here in St. Louis. I guess he got all the talent in my family, because I sure cannot carry a tune in a bucket.

Don't forget to send your paid reservation in by January 10th so that Cindy can have an accurate head count for the dinner reservations.

Taylor's Story

TAYLOR ROZIER

Few people in Missouri Ranch Horse Association know Taylor Rozier, but everyone knows her horse Tee Topsy Turvy. “Topsy” has won just about every year end award given over the last few years with different riders. Topsy has also helped Peggy Meador, Maggie O’Leary, Cathy Jackson, and MaryAnn Cash to ARHA awards at the National ARHA level.

Taylor was a student of MaryAnn Cash. Her lessons were on Topsy. Then in 2007 Taylor was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Her one desire was to own Topsy, and her parents helped that happen in the spring of 2008. Topsy became Taylor’s therapy, with her real goal to show in MoRHA and ARHA events. Taylor and Topsy made it to the show ring at several Mid-Rivers Saddle Club shows and the fun shows at the National Equestrian Center, where they had a lot of success.

Taylor had to undergo radiation treatment during all of 2008. Her plan was to show Topsy at MoRHA in 2009 and hopefully become the club's "Rookie of the Year." In January of 2009 she was released to come to the barn and get ready for the 2009 show season. While her show preparation was occurring she suffered a relapse, and by March the tumor had returned. Taylor went back into treatment maintaining her goal of showing with the Ranch Horse folks.

July 25, 2009 Taylor lost her battle with cancer. She had a severe seizure, went into a coma, and died. She will be missed at Bryan Island Stables and by all of the horse people who got to know her. Never once did she complain or wonder “why me, God?”

In honor of Taylor, and her brave fight to become an active MoRHA member, a portion of the proceeds of the October “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” show will be donated to her family’s charity of choice. They request that all donations be sent to the "Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF),Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, In 302 Ridgefield Ct., Asheville, NC 28806, www.pbtfus.org. (Submitted by MaryAnn Cash and Mona Prater).

End of the 2009 Show Season

The 2009 show season has been phenomenal. For the first time we had four two-day shows which were all double-judged. We went to this venue due to the high costs of fuel in 2008 and the consensus of our members, who wished to show in the most economical way and at the same time have the opportunity to gain as many points as possible. In addition to those show we had our first-ever MoRHA show as an "exhibition" at the 2009 Missouri State Fair in Sedalia. We are hoping for a return invitation to the State Fair and possibly a weekend-slot next year. It will take two years as an "exhibition" show before we are eligible to become of the official MO State Fair family and no longer be an "exhibition only" horse show. Once we become an offical fair exhibitor we become eligible for even more State Perks, like State Fair trophies and possibly even "premiums" from the State Fair budget. In case you do not know what "premiums" means, it means cash...cash for our exhibitors and/or our club.  So, we are anxiously awaiting this designation.

Our next MoRHA event will be the Awards Banquet. This will be held at the VFW Hall in Warrenton, MO where we have held our banquet for the last two years. If you have not been to one of our banquets, you are missing a real treat. We have music, great food, a general member's meeting, and the best ranch horse people for company that you would ever hope to meet.

This year will be no exception and we will once again have Jukebox Productions provide our entertainment system and Cattleman's BBQ providing our catering.

Once again we will be having a silent auction to help offset the yearly expenses of a variety of MoRHA projects. These include such items as our Youth Scholarship, clinics, informational booths at various horse fairs etc.  We ask each and every member to donate something for the auction tables. We would love you to bring any horse-related item, or for that matter, any item that you think your fellow members might like to bid on for our good causes.

The price of admission has not been established at this time, but we are all for keeping our costs to a minimum and do not expect much of an increase, if any, over our 2009 price of admission, which was less than $15.00 per adult with children under the age of 5 eating for free. I will post the price of the tickets as soon as they are set by the board of directors.

Also, we will be looking for a few good cowboys and cowgirls to serve on the board of directors for 2010/2011. Please consider this as an opportunity to serve your club. We would appreciate applications as soon as possible.  List all horse related experience, expertise in any specific field you may have that would help our club and any other brag qualifications, i.e. education, business experience  etc.. that you think would make you a good candidate to serve on the MoRHA board.

You may mail your resume to:

Shannon McInerney
2901 Meyer Rd
Foristell, MO 63348.

All applications will be considered by the board of directors for vote by the end of 2009.  Remember, it is important to have our members involved in the official business of the club. We are a not for profit club registered in the State of MO and the pay you will receive is in the form of the satisfaction you will have from helping your fellow ranch members.

Remember: We cannot accept convicted felons, convicted animal abusers, or out-of-MO state candidates for these positions.

Fall show Series

The MoRHA fall show series is coming up fast. September 12-13 will be our first show and will be held in Midway Expo Center at Columbia, MO. This show will be officiated by Jill Phillips and Carrie Dowell.

The October 3-4 show will host the annual "Tough Enough To Wear Pink" Wrangler' trademark benefit show for cancer and this year we will be donating a portion of our proceeds to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation in memory of little Taylor Rozier. Taylor's story is on the Home Page and she will be in our thoughts at the October show. Please try and bring an item for the auction so we can help in the fight to cure brain tumors in children.

STATE FAIR NEWS

What a wonderful time was had by all who attended the MO STATE FAIR and participated in the MoRHA show. The special State Fair Ribbons and the Laser Etched State Fair-MoRHA glasses that were donated by the Schomberg family were fabulous prizes for all the first and second place winners in each class. I think Lindsey Conti has a set of 8...or close to it.

All the youth kids did great and did you know that if your kid participated as an exhibitor in the State Fair that they cannot be counted absent? That is the word from the Director of the Fair as he quoted a Missouri law that states just that. So, if your kid's teacher counted them as absent and they were showing with MoRHA, go talk to the school about his "education" at the MO State Fair.

Once again, we had exhibitors drive in from out of state. ARHA folks from AR, TN, and IL were competing for those glasses and State Fair ribbons and we were glad to have them.

What is is with the MoRHA show and precipitation from above? It seems that each of our shows has some sort of moisture in the form of sleet, snow or rain this year and the State Fair was no exception. The night prior to the show it poured down rain and the thunder was enough to wake me while I slept in my horse trailer.  The actual day of the show was sunny and beautiful and if you get a chance look at the State Fair Photos and you will see the blue sky and sunshine on all the faces of our exhibitors.

I cannot say enough about our office help. Ann Bernstein, our Treasurer and Debbie Smith our Data Manager worked hand and hand with Christine Wright taking entries and tabulating classes and results. We would not put on such a successful show if it were not for the behind the scenes work of these three young ladies. Our MoRHA Hats go off to you all.  Linda Conti sat in for a few rounds with Debbie and helped out keystroking in the names of horses and exhibitors.

Would you like to be a part of the inner circle at the MoRHA shows? We have plenty of jobs available for those that might like to help? At the State Fair show Earlene Cole (mother of board member Quintana Garcia) worked as our gate person. She had the final say as to who, when and where each exhibitor could and could not be. I did not see an electric prod in her hand, but she did keep the show moving quickly through the gates from class to class - Thanks Earlene.

Chris Moynihan did his usual outstanding job as our announcer.  His voice has a rich deep tone and he gets the attention of the crowd and holds it until he is done speaking. Ron Tittle worked as our ring steward at the State Fair. Ron always has a professional western attitude and confidence as he performs his duties helping our judges get through the class schedule. Thanks Ron and Chris!

MoRHA president Mike Kavanagh is always working, or so it seems. Whether it is helping Pat Prater (our cattle supplier) unload the wild ones, or setting up trail obstacles, Mike is invovled. I am not sure that these sweat producing efforts are part of his job description, but I think they are not. Thanks Mike, we couldn't do it without you.

Cattle supplie Pat Prater gets his feet dirty as he sets about the job of putting vinyl numbers on chains around the neck of the wild and wooley cattle. This is a dangerous and dirty job - Thanks Pat and now that Mona's hip is better, maybe she can climb in that manure soaked pen and give you a hand wrestling those steers while you put on those numbers.

We have a number of MoRHA members that are always out there in the pen if we need panels removed, cones set up or help in any other venue. MaryAnn Cash is always seen among these folks. Not every exhibitor and trainer will get her hands dirty doing the grunt work, but MaryAnn does and we love her for that effort.

ARHA SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

ARHA 2009 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

MoRHA Youth member, Louie Conti, was presented with a $500.00 ARHA Scholarship to be used for his education at MIZZOU this coming fall. We are all extremely proud of Louie and wish him well in his scholastic pursuits. The ARHA had a small presentation at the June 2009 ARHA World Show in Murfreesboro, TN.

Daniel Phipps of TN was also a recipient of a $500.00 ARHA Scholarship and we know that the TN ranch horse folks are equally as proud of Daniel as we are of Louie. Way to go guys!

JUNE NEWS

MISSOURI RANCH HORSE ASSOCIATION
JUNE -2009 NEWSBITS

ARHA WORLD SHOW
If you check your stalls they might be empty because all the ranch horses in Missouri are on their way to the ARHA World Show in Murfreesboro, KY. Once again MoRHA is proud to be the host of the World Show Ice Cream Social. Last year we might have ordered a little too much ice cream and most of the Missouri group had ice cream for breakfast the next few mornings after the social. Hopefully our group will return with World Champion titles and no ice cream.

Linda Conti and Quintana Garcia are in charge of the Missouri decorating team. So, if you have any special Missouri items that would help make our alley shine, give one of them a call. From what I have heard through the grapevine there is talk about a miniature stainless steel Gateway Arch. Maybe someone has a Clydesdale they can loan us? Just kidding….

MAY SHOW
The results of the May show should be up on the website, please check them out. We had a great turn-out despite the heavy downpour on Friday night. We were pleased to have exhibitors from Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Our announcer, Chris Moynihan and his associate Ron Tittle, did an awesome job of telling us just where and when to go and how everyone performed. Judges Dennis Cappel and George Fluhr called the results their way and their way was right on the mark.

STATE FAIR SHOW
August 20 is the date of the first-ever Missouri State Fair show. It is also Governor’s Day and we are hoping to have the “Gov” help us hand out one or two of our special commemorative State Fair Ribbons. Remember you will need a current health certificate and Coggins test for each and every horse that enters the fair grounds. No dogs will be allowed into the fairgrounds, so leave your pups at the camping area or in the motel if you bring them with you. More information is available on the www.missouriranchhorse.com website. Those of you that wish to have an RV hook-up or camp should visit the www.mostatefair.com website.

SPONSORS/DONORS:
We have a new sponsor to mention. Whispering Pines Trail Rides has donated two weekend trail packages for two people for the 2009 season. One trail ride was auctioned off at the May show and the other one will be auctioned off at the ARHA World Show in June. The proceeds of these auctions will benefit the MoRHA Youth Scholarship Fund and the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer awareness. Please visit Whispering Pines and tell say “thank you” for their generous contribution.

Additional sponsors/donors for 2009: Charlie’s Farm and Home Supply in Wentzville, MO – Manna Pro Corporation – HNB Bank in Troy, MO – Missouri Farm Bureau - Lordex Spine Center, Columbia, MO – Cross Country Trail Ride in Eminence, MO – Kavanagh Quarter Horses, Elsberry, MO - Animal Fitness Center of Union, MO – Wright Equestrian Center, Troy, MO – Prater Farms and Riding Center, Fulton, MO - Custom Accounting & Tax Service of St. Louis & Troy, MO – Garcia Performance Horses Plus in Union, MO - Crescent Ridge Ranch, Foristell, MO – Segundo Insurance, Warrenton, MO – Roger Cole Equine Dentistry, Marshfield, MO. – We urge all our members to support these fine folks!

TEARS AND CHEERS
We were saddened to hear of Wil Wright’s loss of his beloved horse, Marverick over the May show weekend. Wil and Maverick were generally seen fast trotting around the show grounds and Maverick will be missed. It seems that Maverick suffered a fatal injury of unknown cause while grazing in his favorite pasture. The 15-year-old appaloosa was scheduled to go to the Appaloosa World Show with Wil, but will now be grazing in horse heaven instead.

MoRHA member from Oklahoma, Debbie Dobbs, took a tumble off her horse, Rocket, on Friday night prior to our May show. Debbie ended up in the University Hospital in Columbia where she was found to have suffered a few cracks here and there, but is recovering nicely at the Rusk Rehab Center.  We wish you well Debbie.

Julie Wiser, MoRHA member from Russellville, MO was back in the saddle at the March show. Julie came off her big paint gelding when he made a quick move off the rail and she did not. A few stitches got Julie back in shape and we were sure glad she returned to show in May. Way to Cowgirl-Up Julie!

MoRHA youth member Lindsey Conti traveled to Bowling Green, KY to show at the SKRHA show. She returned with the High-Point Youth title for the show. Lindsey also headed to the Lake St. Louis National Equestrian Center where she competed in the Missouri Reining Association “Wild Slide.” Lindsey brought home a score of 70 and the blue ribbon in her first class. She went on to win a 4th and 5th place ribbon in a couple of other classes.
Youth member Jess Gore won the 2D poles series at TLC and won a total of $64.00. The Wright Equestrian Riders, who are MoRHA members, took first at the Bridlespur Hunter Pace this spring.

Until next time – Happy Tails!
Shannon Hart-McInerney

WELCOME WHISPERING PINES TRAIL RIDES/OUR NEWEST SPONSOR/DONOR

Whispering Pines Trail Ride (managed by: Casey, Annette, Kayla, Kristin, & Kyle Hemken) has come on board the MoRHA wagon train as our newest sponsor/donors. These trail ride packages will be auctioned off to benefit these two great causes.

In case you are not familiar with Whispering Pines, they have over 100 miles of trails with new paths being forged as I write this.

According to their website information you can "Enjoy the abundance of wildlife, springs, caves, and wildflowers on 25,000 acres of Ozark National Scenic river ways trails and old logging roads. This unique vacation spot offers trout fishing, canoeing, and six major springs in the area. Let yourself be nestled in the heart of the Ozarks along the beautiful Current River. Camp among virgin Pines and let nature sing you her lullaby."  Wow, that makes me want to load up my horse and head their way doesn't it you?  Please visit their website for more information about this facility at www.whisperingpinestrailride.com.  Remember to thank them for their generosity when you see them and we urge our readers to support Whispering Pines Trail Ride.

In addition to visiting and doing business with Whispering Pines, we also encourage our members to support the Cross Country Trail Ride and Golden Hills Trail Ride for their continuing support of our ranch horse organization. We are very fortunate to have such first rate equine facilities in our MoRHA family.
